How many hours a day should you wear clear aligners?
In short
Clear aligners usually need to be worn 20-22 hours a day, which means at night too. You only take them out to eat, to drink anything other than water and to brush your teeth, then put them straight back in. If they stay out for too long, your teeth fall behind schedule and treatment takes longer.
Why do they need to be worn for so many hours?
Each aligner applies a gentle, continuous pressure that moves the teeth by a tiny amount. This movement needs time and consistency: if the pressure is frequently interrupted, the teeth tend to stop moving or even drift back.
Wearing them 20-22 hours leaves about 2-4 hours a day free. That time is for meals and oral hygiene, not a break from the treatment.
Can you take aligners out to eat?
Yes; in fact, you have to. Eating with aligners in can damage them and trap food debris against your teeth. These are the most useful habits:
- take your aligners out before every meal or snack;
- with aligners in, drink only water: sugary drinks, coffee or tea can stain them and encourage tooth decay;
- brush your teeth before putting them back in, or rinse your mouth thoroughly if you are out;
- when you are not wearing them, keep them in their case, not wrapped in a napkin.
The good news is that you can eat normally and brush your teeth as usual, with no wires or brackets to clean. Our article on invisible orthodontics gives more details on hygiene and comfort.
What happens if I don't wear my aligners?
Forgetting them for a few hours can happen: the important thing is to put them back in as soon as possible. If they are often left out, or out for whole days, a few things can happen:
- the teeth do not reach the position planned for that stage;
- the next aligner fits poorly or feels tighter than usual;
- treatment takes longer, and sometimes a new scan is needed to reprogramme the aligners.
If an aligner no longer fits properly, do not force it in and do not move on to the next one by yourself. Contact the clinic and we will tell you what to do. The stages of treatment are explained on our page about straightening teeth with clear aligners.
If you are considering aligners and want to know whether they would fit in with your daily routine, you can book an assessment visit at our clinic in Via Cesare Pavese 135, Rome EUR.
