How long does clear aligner treatment take?

by Dr Nihad Pljevljak |

In short

Clear aligner treatment usually takes from 4-8 months in simple cases up to 18-24 months in more complex ones. The length depends on how far your teeth need to move, how your body responds and how many hours a day you wear the aligners. You will get an accurate estimate after your examination.

How many months does it take to straighten teeth?

There is no single timescale that applies to everyone. Aligners move the teeth a little at a time: each aligner produces a movement of a few tenths of a millimetre and is usually changed every one or two weeks. The further the teeth have to travel, the more aligners are needed.

As a rough guide, treatment times break down like this:

  • Simple cases (mild crowding, small gaps between the teeth): about 4-8 months.
  • Moderate cases (rotated teeth, deep bite): about 12-18 months.
  • Complex cases (root movements, extractions): about 18-24 months.

These ranges are only indicative: your case may turn out differently.

What can make treatment longer or shorter?

The factor that matters most is consistency. Aligners only work while they are in your mouth, which is why they need to be worn for most of the day, usually 20-22 hours. If you take them out often, your teeth fall behind schedule and treatment takes longer.

Other factors include:

  • the health of your gums and bone, which needs to be checked before starting;
  • your biological response, which differs from person to person;
  • attending check-ups regularly, usually every 4-6 weeks;
  • any final refinements with a few additional aligners.

How do we arrive at an accurate estimate?

At the first visit we take a digital scan of your mouth. The sequence of movements is planned on the 3D model, and we work out how many aligners will be needed: this is what gives a realistic forecast of the timescale. The stages of treatment are described on our page about straightening teeth with clear aligners.

Remember that the work does not end with the last aligner. It is followed by the retention phase, which keeps the teeth in their new position. If you would like to understand the whole process better, read our article on invisible orthodontics and treatment times.

To find out how long your own treatment might take, the first step is an assessment visit at our clinic in Via Cesare Pavese 135, Rome EUR. After examining your mouth, we will give you an estimate based on your case.
