How long does teeth whitening last?
In short
Professional teeth whitening usually lasts from one to three years. How long it lasts varies from person to person: the main factors are how often you have coffee, tea or red wine or smoke, how well you look after your daily oral hygiene and the characteristics of your enamel. With regular check-ups the result lasts longer.
Why the whiteness fades over time
Whitening does not “freeze” the colour of your teeth. The peroxide-based gel breaks down the pigments inside the enamel and dentine, but new pigments arrive every day from food, drinks and smoking.
That is why the result does not disappear suddenly: it fades slowly. Usually the most noticeable part of the improvement remains visible throughout the first year, then the shade gradually tends to drift back towards where it started.
What determines how long it lasts
Two people who have the same treatment may find their results last for different lengths of time. The main factors are:
- Diet: coffee, tea, red wine and other strongly coloured foods bring stains back to the surface of the teeth.
- Smoking: this is one of the most common reasons for yellowing coming back.
- Oral hygiene: plaque and tartar hold on to pigments, so brushing and flossing every day make a real difference.
- Type of stain: discolouration caused by eating and drinking habits responds better than discolouration that originates inside the tooth, for example from certain medicines.
- Enamel: thickness and translucency vary from person to person and affect the result.
How often can you repeat teeth whitening?
There is no fixed deadline that applies to everyone. In most cases the full treatment does not need repeating: when the colour starts to fade, a touch-up with a less concentrated gel can be considered, usually about a year later.
Repeating whitening too close together, or using over-the-counter products without supervision, can increase tooth sensitivity without any real benefit. That is why it is the dentist who decides whether and when to intervene, after checking your enamel and gums. If you are wondering whether you can do a touch-up yourself, you will find the answers in our FAQ on whitening your teeth at home.
How to make the result last longer
- Rinse your mouth with water after coffee, tea or wine.
- Keep up your regular check-ups and professional hygiene appointments, which remove surface stains.
- Use the toothpaste your dentist recommends, for example one containing hydroxyapatite.
- If you smoke, cutting down or quitting also helps the colour of your teeth.
